Fractional CFO
“Taylor was remarkably helpful in taking the templated model and customizing it so that it worked for our specific and very complicated use case. It was a smooth process that would not have been possible with someone who was equally great at spreadsheets but lacked Taylor's deep knowledge of venture capital.”

Finance leadership and systems for venture funds

A venture firm needs a clear view of its capital, commitments, portfolio, and operating costs, plus someone responsible for turning that information into decisions. I work as a fractional CFO to lead the financial operations and build the systems behind them.

That means helping you decide when to call capital, how much to reserve, what the management company can afford, and how to communicate performance to LPs. It also means improving how the information gets collected, checked, and reported.

A CFO who builds

I joined Laconia Capital Group as fractional CFO in 2024. In 2026, I also became fractional CFO of a private venture firm investing in crypto and venture funds.

Alongside that work, I built Portfolio, an open-source fund reporting and operations platform, and software for distributing K-1s to limited partners. My background combines fund operations, venture investing, financial modeling, and hands-on software development.

I bring that combination to your firm: financial judgment, responsibility for the work, and the ability to improve the workflows and tools used to do it.

What I take responsibility for

  • Capital planning and fund economics. Portfolio construction, investment pacing, reserves, capital call timing, and return scenarios. Connect those decisions to fund cash needs and management company budgets.
  • Financial operations. Coordinate fund administrators, accountants, auditors, tax advisers, legal counsel, and other providers. Manage cash flow, banking, expenses, payments, and payroll within the agreed scope.
  • LP reporting and investor relations. Quarterly and annual reporting, investor communications, fund financial statements, valuation coordination, and performance across investment vehicles.
  • Investment operations. Deal funding, expense management, document execution, and cap table and exit waterfall analysis.
  • Compliance coordination. Work with your advisers and providers on applicable registrations, filings, deadlines, and supporting records.
  • Management company planning. Budgets, cash forecasts, fee income, and operating expenses, with a view of what the firm can sustain as it grows.

Build better ways to run finance

Tools are useful when they improve the work. I start with the decision or workflow, understand the existing systems, and then determine what to keep, connect, buy, or build.

Depending on your needs, the engagement can include:

  • Connected reporting. Bring fund, portfolio, and LP information into a consistent view, with clear sources and checks against the underlying records.
  • Planning that stays useful. Build budgets and forecasts that can be updated as investments, fee income, expenses, and assumptions change.
  • Less repetitive work. Design workflows for collecting portfolio data, preparing reports, distributing documents, and identifying exceptions.
  • Practical use of AI. Use AI to assist research, interpretation, drafting, and workflow execution, while keeping calculations, source records, and approvals explicit.

Financial controls belong in the design. Access permissions, supporting records, review steps, and approval rules should be part of the workflow. Finance remains responsible for the numbers and sign-off.

You can explore Portfolio to see an example of the software I build. The right engagement for your firm may use your existing tools, Hemrock software, or a combination.

Two ways to engage

Ongoing fractional CFO

For firms that need someone to own financial planning and coordinate day-to-day operations. We agree on responsibilities, reporting cadence, provider relationships, and the systems work needed to support them.

The scope can cover fund and management company operations, LP reporting, capital planning, and ongoing improvements to finance workflows. I can also support portfolio companies on specific financial questions.

Pricing depends on fund size, complexity, and scope.

Flexible advisory and projects

For emerging managers, syndicates, and SPVs that need experienced support for a particular decision or a defined piece of work.

Examples include a fund forecast, reserve and pacing review, management company budget, LP reporting process, or finance workflow implementation. Engagements can be project-based, monthly check-ins, or quarterly retainers, with email support between sessions.

We scope the work around what your firm needs now, and can expand the relationship as operations grow.

Common questions

Do you replace our fund administrator or accountant?

The engagement can work alongside your existing providers. We agree on who owns each responsibility, how information moves between systems, and where review and approval happen.

Do we need to adopt your software?

No. I work with your existing tools and assess changes based on the operating need. Custom software is one option when it makes the work easier to maintain and review.

Can we start with a project?

Yes. A specific planning or reporting problem is often a useful starting point. It can remain a standalone project or develop into ongoing CFO support.

What should we expect first?

We review your fund structure, current financial processes, providers, and immediate decisions. From there, I propose a scope with clear responsibilities, deliverables, and priorities.
