LLMs can do calculations
How Hemrock is building APIs to support building venture industry models with AI.
August 25, 2026

Last week I soft-launched a new "Ask Hemrock" feature on the homepage. Powered by Claude (and soon, OpenAI) plus some custom engineering, it answers questions about the spreadsheet and web-based models and can run calculations for cap tables, exit waterfalls, and venture funds using the Hemrock APIs for each of those models. While the web-based tools offer more powerful surfaces for detailed modeling (it's easier to enter in all the details for each respective model through the web-based interface customized for each model), the chat can still use the same models to help you with quick modeling and questions. It is important to note this is not the same as asking Claude to calculate an exit waterfall or a cap table for a new funding round: the LLM uses a structured approach and calculation engine for the math by explicitly using the Hemrock APIs, resulting in a better combination of AI and math than relying on the LLM for all of the calculations.
You can also connect the Hemrock MCP server and do your calculations directly in Claude or ChatGPT, if you prefer that interface, just without some of the custom directions I've provided through Ask Hemrock.
More to come on this as I continue improving the performance of the model APIs and work to improve how they can be discovered and used by humans and agents.
